Strawberries...where can I get good plants?

I want to plant strawberries this fall. Does anyone know where I can get some good quality plants? Any tips from successful gardeners? This will be my first round in AZ. Thanks!

Fruit Tree Day

Hi everyone. I'm Randy of Randy's Orchard. I'm the past Chairman VPA and headed up Fruit Tree Day for several years. What my friend Greg Peterson, started and I continued was to take the guess work out of buying trees. I have 500 trees. I lecture on the topic. I've grown almost every tree on the list. I understand chill hours, root stock, pollinizers, taste tests. Each year I get together with other experts and we choose the very best trees from the very best nurseries in the west, plus get…

New Garden Facebook Page

I've decided to start sharing my garden story more publicly via Facebook. You can find it at http://www.facebook.com/CarfreeDesertGardener

The purpose is mainly to chronicle the history as I work to develop this garden just north of Phoenix.

Sorry, I gave the incorrect name for the melon pear.  The correct one is solanum muricatum.

looking for melon pear cutting

I'm looking for a cutting of solanum melancatum, aka pepino melon, melon pear.  Does anyone know where I might find one locally or does anyone have a cutting they would sell me?  I've checked online and can only find seeds but they fruit better from cuttings.  Thanks.

I've been asked develop a class to teach gardening at my school!

I've been asked to develop a class to teach gardening as an elective, and to start a community garden for students at my high school. This is an opportunity to show kids a more sustainable way! I welcome your ideas, resources, and comments! The kids range from very low functioning to honor students.

Pecking problem- free layers

We have four layers, 1.5 yrs old that peck each other constantly. They were free range during the day but new rescue dogs mean they are often in coup and run. We have tried everything from hanging herbs, quadrupling the run size, multiple sprays, saddles, removing and reintroducing etc. It hasn't gotten bloody but we don't know how's to stop them and don't want to introduce new hens/flock. Two have most of their feathers gone..it's terrible.

Any ideas? Anyone want four chickens? They… Continue

Too much foliage, not enough production

Does anyone know what the problem is when the plant foliage is very healthy but the plant doesn't produce any fruit?  Is there too much of something, or too little of another thing?

Sudden Quail Death...

We have been raising domestic quail for over 6 months.  Today we had the oddest issue.  The quail were fine when we checked them yesterday morning and then this afternoon two were dead and one was very lethargic.  We removed the ant covered dead birds and put the lethargic one into a recovery pen.   Feed was fine, water was flowing normally, air flow to the pens is good and they are well shaded.

Can anyone offer up some wisdom or explanation?
