"Patricia, in addition to farmers' markets, there are also many people who sell backyard chicken eggs from their home; often they advertise on Craigslist. Each person manages their bird differently, but whether you buy backyard eggs or…"
I would love a date palm. What variety did you choose?
Your burmuda is doing its best to take over, isn't it? I would suggest you mow the bermuda so it doesn't take sun away from your trees while they're young. We've…"
"Zaher, we've lived for 18 years with flood irrigation, burmuda, and fruit trees, which includes various citrus, apricot, and apple, as well as pecans and almonds. The best way to control the burmuda is with berms, but building berms around your…"
"The saline sitz bath sounds like a great idea. In aquaculture, fish parasites are more sensitive to salt than fish, so salt water is used to effectively dehydrate the parasites. I'm guessing this may be the same with the maggots. It's…"
"Sour crop can sometimes be the result of an impacted crop. Have you checked for that? If not, feel her crop. If it feels empty, no worries. If full and pliable, like silly putty, it's impacted. For an impacted crop give some olive oil - a few…"
"Just jumping in with some random thoughts...
Random thought #1: We will be expanding our aquaponic gardening in part due to water use. Aquaponics uses far less water than raised or lowered beds.
Random thought #2: Tucson is way ahead of the game on…"
"Thank you, Dr. Brooks. Aquaponics is one of the best gardening methods here in Arizona, and you get fish as well! A full dinner from your own backyard. What can be better? Only a couple days left before class!"
"Good morning, Dr. George! This is a great question because every person considering aquaponics should seriously consider this. Here's my take on it:
Affordability is a personal matter based on one's income and other expenses. What's…"
"We have three cattle (2 dairy and 1 steer) on our 1/2 acre pasture. We do have to supplement with alfalfa, but in the summer most of their food comes from the pasture. It's primarily bermuda with some rye and other odds & ends. We…"
"We have a neighbor who has flock of boar goats. They're kept on a pasture and allowed in the front yard on occasion, because they do keep the burmuda lawn mowed. Every plant/tree is protected, though, because that would be their preference. We…"
"Thanks for the update--My Basque hen started siting 4 days ago and since the rooster is gone, I've had to find another source and there is a fellow that works at Western Ranchman who has promised to bring me a few eggs tomorrow. I am…"
"Thanks, Silvia! We need as many people as we can get to speak in favor of the bill, and to attend city meetings when they address poultry issues. Things went pretty poorly for Chandler last summer, but they are going well so far in Gilbert as they…"
"K, it sounds like you're doing all the right things.
Personally, I would separate her so she doesn't have to compete for food or water and so other birds won't harass her. I would also clean the puncture wound with hydrogen peroxide.…"
"Since she pecks at food, I assume she can move her head up and down a bit? Does she move it from side to side? I assume she can walk and is pooping?
As Cathrine suggested, check her neck. You should be able to feel all the vertibrae lined up…"
I spent the last 15 years in higher education and technology/distance learning. I then left academia to start our educational mini-farm at our residence. We now run classes in a variety of topics related to food production and natural living.
We now have a 600 gallon aquaponics system inside a greenhouse with breeding tanks and nursery indoors. We also have 33 chickens & 3 turkeys, a dairy cow with calf and a dairy goat.
Hello Dear, How is everything with you,I picked interest on you after going through your short profile,I have something very vital to disclose to you,but I found it difficult to express myself here, since it's a public site.Could you please get back to me on(email@example.com)for the full details. Have a nice day. thanks Bruno Serra.
Thanks for the update--My Basque hen started siting 4 days ago and since the rooster is gone, I've had to find another source and there is a fellow that works at Western Ranchman who has promised to bring me a few eggs tomorrow. I am sorry your hens gave up on the project but we tried.....:-) No big deal--it was an experiment after all.
Hi Sheri I was asked by a friend to give you her email address Her name is Joy Howell she is trying to start a cow coop and was wondering how yours was doing. Her name again is Joy Howell and her email is firstname.lastname@example.org Thier farm is up in Golden valley AZ
I'm looking forward to your bug class! Will you have bugs available? Might you be interested in hosting a local producer of BSFL? Before or after the class? If its not acceptable by the 'rules', that's ok too. I just found out that a gentleman I've been working with on AP stuff has some for sale.
Boy, you've got me excited now!! I'm going to try to make it tomorrow night. But I'm not familiar with the Tempe Transportation Center. I looked on the Permaculture site, but maybe I'm not looking in the right place?
I was thinking of taking your Kitchen Worm Composter Class, but there's just the two of us and I don't know if we would have enough daily scraps to keep the worms happy. We do, however, have a vegetable garden and wanted to find out if you sell worms or if you know where I can get some.
Sorry to be so slow in answering! You asked for ideas and my brain froze up ;-) On a slightly different idea, I noticed you are teaching an AP class in Tempe. Would you like to offer a tour of my place, maybe after class? I am located about a mile from where you are teaching.
