Kathleen replied to Heather Green's discussion Freezing Okra - to blanch or not to blanch - advice?
"Depends on how you will prepare them. I have been freezing okra for use in soups and succotash for a few years and it's fine. Both of those dishes are ones where the okra sort of melds into the rest of the ingredients and are not really the…"

Kathleen replied to Torrie B's discussion cold press for jojoba nuts
"Likely true. At one time in the mid 1980s or so, there was a commercial jojoba farm business start up out in the far west/southwest valley. Wish I could remember details but I know this was focused on harvesting the oil for wholesale as ingredients…"

Kathleen replied to Linda Enger's discussion Okra _ stay or pull
"Me too, okra supporter here :) I've grown 5-6 burgundy plants in a 24" pot the past several years with good results. I just save up the pods until I have enough for a recipe. This year I also put in some Clemson seedless and it is far more…"

Kathleen replied to Victoria Jordan's discussion Drip irrigation of raised vegie beds
"I also just found this thread, very interesting and what a great setup you are creating, Victoria. I have to agree with Catherine. I think you need to forget about adding more compost and dry matter and instead add clay. I would do it by putting in…"

Kathleen replied to Jessica Lynn Mcdonald's discussion Prickly Pear Fruit
"And it is beautiful in bloom and fruit. I make jelly and juice every year. The "system"seems to be filled with the most backward clueless people. I agree with you, Powell. The govt groups should be promoting this, not trying to offer…"

Kathleen replied to grrlscout's discussion
"Cool link! I sure wish some Valley folks would use this and share where public trees are located. I am going to do my best to put something in. Grrlscount, your trees are no longer registered - nothing in the Valley that I could FIND. There are so…"

Kathleen replied to Gaile S.'s discussion are bermuda grass clipping ok for composting?
"Sure, I'd compost it. Green stuff is good in compost. BUT.... I would notuse it if it had been treated with weed & feed or any of those broadleaf weed killers. And not if any area adjoining the grass had been treated with Roundup.…"

Kathleen replied to Erica (Dawnfire)'s discussion Eaten and not be ME
"I can so relate. As I've shared, almost all my gardening is in extra large containers so I can keep them elevated and safe from bunnies and birds. And I do net them as well in order to keep something to harvest. But, I have a few containers…"

About Me:
I've been into permaculture and natural living concepts for about 30 years and am thrilled it is going more mainstream now. Still, I have lots to learn and share so this seems like a good place to learn. From Michigan but an AZ resident for over 3 decades, professional photographer, enjoying desert living out on the fringe of the Valley.... a desert lover all the way.
