Growing Asparagus?

Hi All,I think I'd like to plant asparagus in my garden this year. I have to admit I've been scared off it in the past. Have many of you had success with it? If so, I wonder if you could answer some…Continue

Soil Solarization

Hi all,I'm not sure, but I've got a pretty strong guess that I've got a disease in my garden soil. I'm guessing fusarium wilt. For a couple years in a row, I've had problems with tomatoes and green…Continue

No till + Ollas - Can you do both?

I am a major fan of using ollas in the garden to save water, and my plants seem to love them. Now I've been reading about no till gardening, and it seems to make a lot of sense. However, the two seem…Continue

Growing Asparagus?

Hi All,I think I'd like to plant asparagus in my garden this year. I have to admit I've been scared off it in the past. Have many of you had success with it? If so, I wonder if you could answer some questions for me? Does it do well on drip irrigation? Does it do well in amended native soil, or should I create a raised bed so I can a different type of soil for it? Should I put it in full sun? Should I plant in fall? January? (I've heard both.) Thanks for any help you can provide!See More

Soil Solarization

Hi all,I'm not sure, but I've got a pretty strong guess that I've got a disease in my garden soil. I'm guessing fusarium wilt. For a couple years in a row, I've had problems with tomatoes and green beans in the summer getting yellow leaves and spots. I always attributed it to heat, but on closer inspection, I think there's more to it than that. Since I can't know for sure, I've decided to be safe and assume it is a disease and solarize my soil. Here's my question. I've only noticed the problem…See More

"You got it!  I anticipate that you would be probably using the DIY glueing regular ol' terra-cotta pots together to make it affordable.  Get some nice big ones with big drainage holes making them easier to fill and keep us posted on…"

"Well, what kind of ollas do you have?  Do you have the fancy cast terra-cotta ollas, or do you have the home made versions?  I was thinking something along the lines of what this guy did, glue a pvc pipe to the top of the olla.  That…"

"Lasagna style, sheet mulching, no till - all in the same style of soil building techniques.  The organic material really breaks down pretty quickly here.  I think you can find some creative ways to combine the two techniques.  the…"
