Poisonous Vine or Friend for Summer Heat

I have received some Jicama seeds (Pachyrhizus erosus) and thought they would be beautiful for shading the girls coop. My research shows the leaves, flowers and pods are poisonous to humans, but I have not been able to determine if they are for chickens...? Is anyone familiar with this plant? Thanks for any assistance.See More

Mesquite and planting edibles

Has anyone had any luck at growing edibles under mesquite tree? If so, what? I'm looking at possibly adding a mesquite on the west side of my chicken coop. I have a passion fruit vine trailing up it currently, but it isn't looking so good. The tree would be at the far end of one of my gardening areas that measures 7ft X 50ft. I was thinking I could plant other varieties of edibles that required less sun...(Hmmm...any help would be appreciated). Thanks!See More

I'm new to raising chickens, and any help would be appreciated. I started with 10 from a local feed store and 1 was a barred rock rooster who found his crow at 8 weeks (WOW). The girls are now 21 weeks and started laying right on schedule at 18 weeks. At about this time I noticed 1 americauna that was starting to get a green hue to its tail feathers, but he doesn't have any spurs and hasn't attempted to crow yet. I have also noted just now a slight green hue on some lower back feathers. Can it…See More

A dominant 9 Week old RIR and pecking

I have a very dominant RIR that is "bullying" her other 8 pals; especially my 3 americaunas (1 has barely any tail feathers at all now...and it has only just started the past 2 days...at least that I am aware of and I'm outside most of the time). What do I do? Do I just let them be and get something to put on their "rear areas"? Any help would be appreciated.

Caren,

Your son is a delight!  I had been thinking about telling him there is a new 2 week old kid and 3 baby Maras, and maybe ducklings soon.  Such fun!  You are welcome to come and see, of course.  Mornings and evenings are better and I have a commitment this Friday, but other than that suggest what works for you.  Ask Colin to give you my phone # if you want to not write this schedule checking ;-)

I look forward to meeting you,

Lisette
